The UM Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension sponsors a large outpatient practice (five locations in Rhode Island) in an academic setting. The primary goal of the practice is superlative patient care,. but the practice also involves education of medical students and residents and nephrology fellows, and clinical research. Patients are given the option to participate in a number of clinical research trials in kidney diseases and hypertension.

The practice accepts patients, on referral, for a wide variety of clinical problems, including acute and chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, proteinuria (protein in the urine), hematuria (blood in the urine), kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and fluid and electrolyte abnormalities. There are specialized clinics in hypertension, featuring 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, hyperlipidemia, and diabetic kidney disease.
